“Steel Targets are not safe” could be a correct statement if used incorrectly or the wrong material/target is used.⁠
⁠
Steel targets are safe when the following is in order:⁠
⁠
1. Armored Material - Steel Targets should have AR500 (at minimum) or AR550 on the strike face so it can resist pitting which will send rounds back in the shooter’s direction.⁠
⁠
2. Forward lean - Steel Targets should have a forward lean that sends most of the frag towards the ground.⁠
⁠
3. Movement - Steel Targets should move when struck in order to allow the system to absorb more of the energy without putting more stress on the plate and it’s components⁠

4. Correct Distances - Steel Targets should be used in accordance with recommended distances/calibers from the manufacturer to avoid pre-mature failure. ⁠

The Grounder is produced with either AR550 or AR500 for the target plate depending on your needs. We ultimately prefer the AR550 because it comes with a lifetime warranty (that you will most likely not have to use) and can allow for closer training. See below for more details.⁠
